Many people were taking classes for leisure or self improvement, rather than to assist in them in the advancement of specific careers.

  • It was not a great success as there are too many students and only one teacher. I think we are already behind with the course work - hopefully it's just teething problems. Later I managed to load the Microsoft Publisher program, but I find it is an earlier edition than the one used on the course.

  • Tuesday 24th September 2002 was the first day of a two day vocational painting course on which I had enrolled at the Gateway Further Education Centre Shrewsbury . . . The Gateway was purpose built by the River Severn on land donated by a benefactor for the express purpose of providing Adult Education for the community at large. It is a thriving educational centre, providing a huge variety of courses and housing its own coffee bar and art galleries. . . ..I joined seven ladies to complete a small group on the course "Painting Flowers in mixed media."

  • 7.15 - 9.45 'Homework' for City and Guilds Machine embroidery class on Wednesday. Completing sample started last week, collecting together fabrics, threads, paperwork etc needed tomorrow.

  • I started a class in voice production and techniques of singing yesterday so I must practice my breathing and voice exercises - let's hope I will improve!

Some students were undertaking Open University courses.

I'm studying for a B.A. (Hons) degree in the Arts, it will take me 6 years part time instead of 3 years full time - which I never could afford to do when I was working, and never had the time to do when I was married and bringing up children.

  • As I am in the final week of an Open University course (first level French) and the oral exam is in 4 days' time I spent the day reluctantly at my desk with the books.

  • 8.30pm Did some studying for Open University - revision for exam in 3 weeks time.

Another diarist was helping out at someone else's class:

  • 12.55pm Collected by local artist (son of a friend) to sit for him in a portrait class at Llanfyllin.
