The Census
The 1891 Census was held on 6 April 1891. The table below represents a page from the census return. As you can see, it contains lots of useful information. For brevity, we use a shortened version of the return on our pages.
Abbreviations were frequently used. "Do." is used for 'ditto' - so "Eliza Do." on the fourth line under "Name and Surname" is short for 'Eliza Bufton'. "Dau." or "Daur." in the "Relation to Head of Family" column is the abbreviated form of 'daughter'.
