side [of] the five middle ones are used up.
Thickened Heel
I Cast on 41 loops and with 4 needles knit plain round and round, making a seam
stitch for about 5 rows. This represents a part of the ankle of a stocking,
so that you may [?shew ] how you would divide the stitches in order to knit
a heel and pick up the stitches for the instep gusset. The heel must be thickened.
II Now arrange the stitches, so that the seam stitch with 10 on each side of
it, shall be on one needle and 10 on each of the other two needles; we will
call these last instep needles and the one with the 21 stitches the heel needle.
III (It may be necessary to knit a few stitches in order to make the cotton
come to the left-end of the heel needle.) You are now going to knit the heel.
Therefore you work with 2 needles only.
IV Slip the 1st stitch every turn and do not make a seam stitch
V Slip 1, purl 1, slip 1, purl 1, to the end. Turn.
VI Slip 1, knit plain to the end, turn.
VII Slip 1, purl 2, slip 1, purl 1, to the end, turn.

IX Slip 1, purl 1 alternately to the end, turn.
X Slip 1, knit plain to the end, turn.
XI Slip 1, purl 2, slip 1, purl 1, to the end, turn. Continue this till you
have 10 slipped stitches at the side.
XII Purl 10, knit 1, purl 1, turn leaving five stitches on left needle
XIII Knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, turn, 9 stitches on left needle.
XIV Purl 1, knit 1, purl 2 together, purl 1 - turn.
XV Knit 2, purl 1, slip 1, knit 1, pull the slipped stitch over the knitted

one, knit one
XXII Purl 5, knit 1, purl 4, purl 2 together, turn
XXIII Knit 5, purl 1, knit 3, slip 1, knit 1, pull slipped stitch over, turn
XXIV Take up the 10 chain stitches on the left side of the heel with the empty
needle, and knit them on to the needle that holds the 11 heel stitches - we
will call this the left heel needle
XXV Knit all the 20 instep stitches on to 1 needle
XXVI You have now 2 empty needles; with one pick up the 10 chain stitches on
the right side of the heel. This we will call the right heel needle.
XXVII You have now one instep needle containing 20 stitches and 2 heel needles
right and left; the right holding 10 stitches, the left 21 (you may if you like
put 5 stitches from the left to the right needle)
XXVIII Knit one complete round, ending at the beginning of the left heel needle
XXIX You must now decrease until you have 41 stitches on all the needles. The
decreasing must be made at the end of the left heel needle, and at the beginning
of the right heel needle
XXX At the end of the left heel needle knit 2 together
XXXI At the beginning of the right heel needle slip one, knit one and pull slipped
stitch over
XXII Knit 2 plain rounds between each decreasing, this makes the instep gusset,
and this must be fairly long to make a comfortable foot.
