Prescription for Mrs Hamilton

Rx Solution of arsenic and mercuric iodide - 20 drops
Hydrobromic acid 3 drachms
Quinine sulphate 8 grains
Nux vomica tincture 80 minims
Tolu syrup 1 ½ oz.
Chloroform water 4 oz.
Water to make 8 oz.
Mix a tablespoonful with a tablespoonful of water three times a day after meals

Liq. Arsen Hydr. - Solution of Arsenic and Mercuric Iodide, Donovan's Solution. "Arsenic is very useful in. . . Bronchial and Pulmonary Affections, as chronic catarrhs, chronic phthisis, spasmodic asthma, acute coryza, hay fever, etc., are much benefited by smoking arsenical cigarettes." (Potter)
Hydrobromic acid - Acidum hydrobromicum dilutum. Sedative, "Coughs of spasmodic and reflex character, . . .it is excellent, but is best employed in conjunction with other remedies." (Potter)
Quinine sulphas - Quinine sulphate - is obtained from the bark of various species of the Cinchona tree. "The principal use of Cinchona is in the malarial diseases, over which its influence is that of a specific." (Potter)  It was also used for acute catarrh and hay asthma.
Nux vomica - Tinctura nucix vomicae - was used as a remedy for ". . Nervous Cough, and the cough of habit . . ." (Potter)
Tolu syrup - "Balsam of tolu is obtained from the trunk of Myroxylon Toluifera, . . . a tree indigenous to New Granada. . . . Its preparations are used principally for their expectorant action in cases in which the mucus is tenacious and removed with difficulty by coughing . . . Used in cough mixtures as a flavouring agent and as a mild expectorant." (BPC)
Chloroform water - Aqua chloroformi - "Respiratory Neuroses, as hay fever, spasmodic asthma, reflex cough, etc. . . ." (Potter)

Rx Chloroform ether 1 ½ drachms
Wine of Ipecacuanha ½ drachm
Tr. of Camphorae compositus 2 drachms
Tincture of Squill 2 drachms
Water to 8 oz.

One tablespoonful every half hour until breathing relieved.

Chloroform ether is toxic, and was used as a narcotic. It is now known as ethylene dichloride.
Wine of Ipecacuanha, made from the roots of Psychotria ipecacuanha, is an expectorant
Tincture of Compound of Camphor, from the tree Cinnamomum camphora, was a popular remedy for cold relief.
Squill: "Squill is the sliced bulb of Urginea maritima, a perennial plant . . .growing along the shores of the Mediterranean." "Squill is a household word in many countries, especially in England, where it is freely used in domestic practice for coughs of infants and children, and causes many deaths by direct poisoning. It is chiefly employed as an expectorant and diuretic . . . It is well used in Bronchitis . . . [and] Chronic Bronchitis" (Potter)

Rx Chloral powders 5 grains
Label. One to be taken every 2 hours if in much pain and afterwards every 5 or 5 hours.

Chloroform 2 drachms
Belladonna liniment 1 oz.
Camphor liniment 4 drachms
Olive oil to 2 oz.
Make into a liniment.

To be rubbed on the face, temples and neck as directed when in much pain.

Croton chloral - "Chloral Butylicum, Butyl-chloral Hydrate, Croton-Chloral, C4H5Cl3O + H2O. . . [for] Tic-douloureux, . . . Croton-chloral is an efficient palliative." (Potter)
Chloroform - used in lotions as a local anaesthetic.
Belladonna liniment - "Used as an anodyne application for lumbago, neuralgia, and rheumatic pains." (BPC)
Camphor liniment - derived from the tree Cinnamomum camphora, it ". . . is a stimulant and rubefacient [makes the skin red] application, and is used as a counter-irritant to rub the chest in the bronchitis of children, or for rubbing on painful joints." (BPC)
